Landesmuseum Koblenz
Nintendo's Super Mario at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

From 4 June to 19 November, 2006, the exhibition "Nintendo. From the Game of Cards to the Game Boy" can be seen on Festung Ehrenbreitstein in the State Museum of Koblenz. After the overwhelming success of "LegoWorld" in 2003, the state museum has prepared another exhibition on games and plays. This time, the focus is on the virtual worlds of playing and gaming, which are not only part and parcel of the leisure time culture of our children and youths but increasingly also of that of adults.

Computer and video games make ever deeper inroads in the market and have become a major leisure time activity for millions of people.

The organizers of the exhibition go to the roots of this phenomenon and by the example of the corporate development of Nintendo trace the meteoric rise of video games. In the technical museum of the state of Rhine Land Palatinate, you can take a look behind the scenes and see how these games are produced and understand their social relevance.

Nintendo, the company that is partner of the exhibition, is a typical example of this industry. The development of that company not only embraces all important stages of the video game industry, Nintendo is the only producer of consoles, handhelds, game controls and games.

It is the almost ritual character of Super Mario, developed by Nintendo's chief designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, that brought new life to the industry after it had been shattered by the big crash in 1983. Super Mario and the invention of the Game Boy a few years later marked the beginning of the second heyday of computer and video games which is continuing to this day. So visitors can be sure to meet that merry plumber and many other Nintendo heroes in the exhibition.

Accompanying the exhibition is a range of other events with workshops, seminars and a number of others devoted to art education.

Other highlights in connection with the Nintendo exhibition include the large event "The Nintendo truck's coming..." (23 July 2006) and Pokémon Day 2006 (24 September 2006).

Take the challenge, have fun and win!
