In the centre of Palatinate, amidst a sea of vines one finds
Neustadt an der Weinstrasse and its wine villages. With over 2,100
hours of sun annually, this area is one of Germany's most
climatically favoured regions. Here, the almond trees can already
start to blossom in February; figs and chestnuts ripen here, and so
almost every weekend between March and November the friendly
residents are usually celebrating some manner of wine
festival.
A tour invites you to "Bummeln & Staunen", or 'stroll
& admire' the historic Old Quarter. The heart of Germany's cosy
wine capital is the historic "Marktplatz" or 'Market
Square', surrounded by the City Hall, old, stylishly restored
framework ruins and the Gothic 'Stiftskirche' Church, the city's
landmark boasting the largest cast steel bell in the entire
world.
Wine bars and cafés entice you to sit outside or snuggle up inside
for a glass of vibrant 'Pfälzer Riesling' or an elegant Late
Burgundy. Narrow, picturesque alleyways reveal distinctive insights
into idyllic courtyards, such as the Renaissance-Innenhof at the
"Haus des Weines" - quite literally, a 'house of wine'.
