Palatinate Winegrowing Region

Enjoy the taste of the south in a glass of Palatinate wine. Mainly traditional grape varieties are grown here, chief amongst them the riesling. However, the region also produces some first-rate burgundy wines. Dornfelder is becoming a true red wine success story, while pinot noir and regent are growing in popularity.

Visitors to this winegrowing region will experience German hospitality at its best. There are a number of romantic little villages, picturesque vineyard guesthouses and romantic castles to discover along the German Wine Route. A real must for any lover of fine wines - that's the Palatinate.

Information, Tips, Discovery Tours:
In this restful and relaxing region, fine wine and good food go hand in hand. It is therefore no surprise that you'll find a variety of gourmet cuisine and rustic specialities on the German Wine Route. The Wine Museum in Speyer has a glass amphora containing the world's oldest wine, which has been scientifically proven to be 1,600 years old. Every year, several hundred thousand people come to raise their glasses to the Palatinate region at the discovery day on the German Wine Route. The art and wine exhibition in Weyher on the Southern Wine Route is also a firm fixture in the region's events calendar. With its attractive rides, great music and first-rate wines and sekt, the Wurstmarkt wine festival in Bad Dürkheim is a festival of superlatives, featuring the "Dürkheimer Fass" - the largest wine barrel in the world which holds up to 1.7 million litres.

TRAVEL GUIDE - EXPLORE THE REGIONS
Palatinate Region: The Palatinate, the southernmost part of the Rhineland-Palatinate, is a veritable Garden of Eden. Fruits such as almonds, figs and kiwis thrive here thanks to a climate that is exceptionally mild. This is a land of superlatives: with more than 150 million vines, the Palatinate has the largest uninterrupted wine-growing area in Rhineland-Palatinate. In Bad Dürkheim, you will find not only the biggest wine barrel in the world but also the biggest wine festival, the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt. The Palatinate also has plenty to offer in the way of historical interest. Speyer's cathedral, for instance, is a UNESCO world heritage site. [ go to travel guide ]
