The Southern Wine Route - A World between Tranquillity and
Springtime Celebration: The Southern Wine Route - around 75
romantic winegrowing villages that line up like the pearls on a
necklace along the German Wine Route, and stretching beyond into the
fertile Rhine Plain and the castle-laden Palatinate Forest.
Located on the Upper Rhine Lower Plain and protected against cold
winds by the Palatinate Forest like a wall on its western border and
by mountain ridges extending to the Rhine in the north and east,
this Palatine winegrowing region enjoys one of Central Europe's most
favourable climates. 1,800 hours of sun annually and an average
annual temperature of 10 ° Celsius (50° F) bear witness to this
fact. Even in the winter months, the temperature rarely sinks below
freezing. While other places tough out the winter with extended low
pressure weather systems and sturdy umbrellas, the landscape of the
Southern Wine Route is already decorated with thousands of blooming
almond trees.
Here where the climate is mild, the landscape is Tuscan and the
people are so friendly, the summer sun shines on gentle vineyard
terraced hills and expansive forests, on figs and lemons. In the
autumn, it almost appears as though the entire landscape is a little
tipsy from the new wine flowing from the presses, making hours of
wine festival fun unforgettable. In the winter, the new vintage
ripens toward maturity in the cellars and tranquillity returns to
the romantic winery villages and spirited towns.
Fine wines, sumptuous delicacies, Palatinate hospitality and a
countryside reminiscent of a master painting make a holiday on the
Southern Wine Route a genuine vacationing experience for
connoisseurs and explorers. Hikers and cyclists, leisure time
athletes and those just looking for a little peace and quiet will
all find what they're looking for. Gourmets and wine lovers, art
aficionados and modern-day adventurers will soon fall in love with
this region. Here's is where you'll find out what's typically
Palatinate and what the Palatines have in common with their
neighbours, the Alsatians - for example, centuries of mutual history
and a knack for enjoying life.
